Overview of the Portlaoise Adult Education Centre

The Portlaoise Adult Education Centre provides adults with ‘second chance’ education opportunities. The centre operates under the auspices of the Laois and Offaly Education and Training Board and in accordance with the regulations of the Department of Education and Skills. The Portlaoise Adult Education Centre Centre offers support to adults who wish to return to learning and who have left school early with few or no formal qualifications. The centre offers a variety of part-time courses are for adults. These include one to one literacy tuition, Intensive tuition for Adult Basic Education in reading, writing, maths and computers, Junior Certificate / Leaving Certificate English and Maths, Workplace Education, Skills for Work, Family Learning. The centre also provides part-time English language classes for ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) learners.

Overview of  subtheme ‘Active Citizenship through Peer Mentoring’

The overall purpose of ‘Active Citizenship through Peer Mentoring’ is to offer participants the opportunity to participate in peer mentoring projects that promote active citizenship amongst all learners and tutors accessing the Adult Learning Centre. The aim is to give all learners and tutors the courage and confidence to share their ideas, information and knowledge in an encouraging and supportive environment. This in turn empowers participants to find their own voice and become more involved in their local communities and society in general.

Peer-Mentoring Practice

Digital Media Projects – focusing on the methodology of peer mentoring to develop IT skills and promote confidence in using digital technology.

English Language Conversation classes – opportunity for the more advanced English language learner to offer support and encouragement to the weaker learner.

Numeracy – using the peer mentoring methodology to develop numeracy skills with adult learners.
